May 1st has been instituted in 1867 in Us and in 1891 in Italy. It celebrates a huge step towards workers’rights, the division of the day in 8 hours to work, 8 to leisure, 8 to rest. It is a pillar of the industrial organization in western modern countries, and we still use the parameter to mark a difference between rich, progressive, western countries (which follow the principle) and the rest of the world, where the average working day is made of 11 hours. Still, the evolution in working contracts post crisis threatens this conquest. A reason more to remember an event that we consider a step towards civilization, and that risks now to be forgotten.
